A few years ago, a cat wandered into Gary Copen's backyard.
Copen, a retired barber and former Big Chimney resident, bonded with the cat for nearly two years at home. He had a soft spot for cats. In November, Copen had to leave behind his "buddy and moved into Brookdale Charleston Gardens' Alzheimer's and dementia care unit.
But since moving to Brookdale he's been able to bond with two new furry friends - even if they aren't flesh and blood.
Christie Ball, the Clare Bridge dementia care program manager at Brookdale Charleston Gardens, heard of a competition in 2016 to enter to win an animatronic cat for the 12 residents living in the memory care unit.
The cats come from Hasbro's JOY FOR ALL Companion Pet line and are the first products launched by Hasbro's new division, focusing on seniors.
Using its years of animatronic experience and unique technology, Hasbro created cats that purr and respond to petting, hugging and motion through six built-in sensors. They make authentic cat sounds and are covered in fur that looks and feels real.
Much to her surprise, Ball got word that she won the competition, and Brookdale received its first animatronic cat in December.
"It was such a huge success with them that we got a second in January, she said.
Copen, 77, instantly took to the cats, which require four C batteries to operate.
He believes the two light-colored kittens are real and that they belong to him. He's started to bond with the cats as if they were his own.
Brookdale staff often find Copen holding the cats, singing and talking to them, carrying them in both arms down the hallway and even trying to give them a bath.
Much like real animals, the cats are a sense of comfort for Copen - especially when he starts to have certain behaviors related to his disease, Ball said.
"He gets anxious and nervous and he wants to know where his mommy and daddy are. Did they leave me?' Things like that. With the cats, we can say, Here, let's play with the cat. Help me take care of the kitty cat.' And it helps get his mind off it, Ball said. "It immediately calms him down.
Copen's face lights up when he sees the cats.
